app advice for speech-language pathologists, educators and parents

about us

Thanks for visiting our site.  Whether you are a parent of a child with special needs, a practicing speech pathologist or a school professional looking to help a child in your care, I hope you will find this website helpful.

My name is Dina Derrick, and I am a certified and licensed speech pathologist practicing in the state of Maine.  I have worked in the field for nearly 20 years now, and have spent the last 16 years working with kids in kindergarten through 5th grade in the South Portland School District.  Many of my students have severe autism and several of those students are minimally verbal. My role now is to provide speech-language services to my students and provide assistive technology consultation throughout the district.

I have been using iPod and iPad technology to help my students improve their communication skills since shortly after these devices arrived on the scene.  Apps have completely changed how we deliver speech services to many of our students, and I have been lucky enough to witness some wonderful communication breakthroughs  using these tools.

My intention with this website is to share that experience with others, and  provide app recommendations and advice you can use to help the children in your care.

I am a bit biased towards apps that come from the Mobile Education Store and I should be up front about my role with that company.  I work closely with this developer, as a consultant, editor and beta tester. I think you will find that these apps turn up quite a bit on this website, but for good reason. They are highly effective, well priced and kids enjoy using them. Wherever I’ve mentioned these apps, I’ve mentioned my connection to them.  And I only list them when I feel they are the best tool for the job.

I hope the information on this website is of some help to you and the children in your life.  If you have questions or comments, please feel free to email me.
